activity Numbers and counting Level 1

Higher Number Wins

Turn over a card each. The bigger number wins the pair.

On this page

  1. 1Tap a card for each of you. Tap the other box to change who starts.
  2. 2Count the dots, then say the number. Which is bigger?
  3. 3Your child taps the winner’s score to give them the point.

At home, without a screen

  1. 1Use a pack of playing cards (aces to tens), or write 1 to 10 on paper twice.
  2. 2Shuffle, deal them out, and each turn one over.
  3. 3They say which number is bigger. That player keeps both cards.
  4. 4Play until the cards run out, then see who has more. Take turns starting.
8 minutes You need: paper, pencil

Why it helps: Numbers and counting: telling which written number is bigger, the part tied most to later maths.

What do I say if they get stuck?

Every card has a half you cannot see yet: how to set it up, what to say when they are stuck, where to take it next, and what they are actually practising. It is free — the account is so the site knows where your child is up to and can send you the right cards.

Want to see it first? These 0 cards are open to everyone, grown-up half and all.
